Can you dig it was presented by Donna Martin in preparation for our September training dig. Thank you to everyone who attended. If you are interested in getting involved in archaeology or would like to volunteer, please contact us at [email protected] for more details.
Our meeting on 5th June was presented by Cecilia Anzani 'Finds from your garden after excavating a bottle pit in her own back garden. Our next meeting on 17th August will be an archaeology refresher session 'Can you dig it' previously advertised for June. On 9th June, we re-visted our dig at Spinney North Bank Mill and uncovered some more secrets from the riverbank. Please do come along and join us - We DO do archaeology!
Our February meeting was a chance to catch up after the winter break and take a look at the Spinney Abbey North Bank field work in more detail. We were very pleased to have Elwyn Davies of the Wicken Mills Trust with us to add his expertise to a productive discussion on how we should move forward with the project. We are hoping to continue our investigation with further field work during the spring. Anyone interested in joining us should contact ACE at:

Archaeological Fieldwork: Spinney North Bank Mill - October 2023
I join Finds Liaison Officer for Cambridgeshire in thanking everyone who attended what was a hugely beneficial and informative talk on the UK Treasure Act. Helen, who is currently training Cambridgeshire's archaeology teams on revisions to the Treasure Act proved to be a font of all knowledge and gave a really interesting and engaging presentation. I'm sure you all join me in thanking Helen for her time and enthusiasm - Donna

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to participate in this celebration of local history unearthed. Academic historian, archaeologist, metal detectorist, and now writer on the subject; Donna Martin discussed her passion for metal detecting, and showed a range of detectors along with a presentation of locally found artefacts and stories about how they were discovered and why they are important to our local history.

Thank you to everyone who came along and supported our ACE talk on the history of glass manufacturing and bottle making. It was a fascinating theme and we are so pleased that so many of you came along and took part. We were delighted to have the opportunity to display and share some of the Soham Museum bottle collection, and thanks especially go to Mary Rae who kindly donated bottles found in her garden.

Archaeology Cambridgeshire East (ACE) was formed as a sub-group of Soham Museum in 2014 under the umbrella of the HLF Jigsaw project, set up to establish active local archaeology groups across Cambridgeshire, with a role to inform the Historic Environment Record of unrecorded and under-recorded archaeological sites within a defined research area. ACE's remit is to carry out archaeological investigation on the east fen edge. We are supported by Oxford Archaeology (East) and enjoy a professional training programme, access to specialist equipment and leading experts. We have attracted a range of experience and expertise to our group and are well equipped to carry out full archaeological surveys. We are currently researching a number of projects across the local area, our activities include: desk top surveys, fieldwalking, test pitting, geophysical surveys, finds identification and processing, plus much more. ACE is free to join and open to all. it is an ideal forum for archaeology students to gain practical experience. Training is part of what we do, so enthusiastic beginners are welcome AND we do do archaeology! If you would like to get involved, please e-mail us at [email protected]
PLEASE NOTE: Whilst archaeology isn't always suitable for people with mobility issues, our History Group offers a broad range of talks and we often have archaeologists as speakers, so please don't feel excluded if you can't walk across a muddy field, you may find we have something to offer you after all. E-mail for further details.
